The one about a writer I admire reading one of my books crazily just happened. I'm fascinated with the Aloysius Pendergast series by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. Well, I have a series in the same vein as their books and I got the guts up to ask one of them to read my book - he did and he wrote me a review I was able to put up on Amazon. I say write to them, why not? What's the very worst thing that happens?
